Warm Hawaiian waters are home to some of the most colorful and vibrant fishes. The parrotfish or uhu in Hawaiian have mouths shaped like beaks they scrape algae from the coral, biting off chunks of living coral, ingesting it internally by grinding it and excreting it as sand. Much of the world's coral sand is produced by parrotfish. Their beautiful blue-green and blue-orange colors are an inspiration for me to paint them. The original was a watercolor and a commission piece for a couple who were scuba divers.
