Lotus of Enlightenment

Lotus of Enlightenment

Categories: Asian

Watercolor

Description

The lotus origins are in China and India. The leaves are large, flowing, and can grow between three to four feet in height. The flowers are pink and open to a size of about are eight to ten inches in diameter. The lotus has been associated with Buddhism and spiritual enlightenment. The beauty of the lotus plant contrasts sharply to the muddy, bog conditions in which they grow. In some varieties their roots and seeds are a source of food for the Asian culture. Leaves are used as a wrapping for food items that require cooking. The dried pods are used today as floral decorations. I can thank my neighbor Diana for sparking my interest in lotus plants and water gardening and teaching me an appreciation for the plant's history and significance.
