The giant torch ginger plant whose stalks grow to twenty-foot lengths produces a flower stalk five feet in height. The bright waxy red flowers are magnificent to see. The scientific name (Phaeomeria magnifica) that means "magnificent pure light." Also depicted is the shell ginger, native to Myanmar and India, which thrives in our tropical Hawaiian rainforests. Blooming in spring to late fall it forms clusters of flowers resembling a strand of white and pink shells. The Hawaiian name is (Awapuhi-luheluhe) means drooping ginger.
